Driving Outside Reykjavik

Driving Outside Reykjavik

Please note that you should take special care when traveling on minor roads, which may be rougher, narrower, and far more hazardous than you are used to. Special care must be taken when driving in the highlands, where rivers are unbridged and can be dangerous. Respect speed limitations and slow down when the road changes from tarmac to gravel, to a single-lane bridge, when crossing rivers or driving through snow. Outside the summer season, always seek information on weather and road conditions before driving out into the country.

A guide (brochure and video) to driving in Iceland is available on the Road Traffic Directorate's website.

An updated guide to road conditions is available on the Road Administration's website.

It is also a good idea to ask your car rental for guidance on driving in Iceland.
